Overview

Neurofeedback trainer Mitsar-BFB is intended for biofeedback therapy based on EEG, EMG, HR and other physiological parameters.

EEG-based biofeedback or Neurofeedback is a technique of a self-regulation in which current parameters of brain activity (EEG) recorded from the subject’s head are presented to a subject through visual, auditory, or game mode modality, while the subject is supposed voluntary or involuntary alter these parameters to reach a more efficient mode of brain functioning.

Neurofeedback is the process by which an individual is presented with a real-time view of his or her own neurological patterns, learns strategies to manipulate brain waves, and aims to self-regulate different brain functions (Teplan, 2002; Johnstone, 2008). During the session, the patient, through a sensor and a recording device, receives information about the changes of one of his biological parameters including EEG, heart rate, muscle tension, body temperature, GSR (skin conductance response) and etc., and tries to change it in a prescribed direction, which allows acquiring and developing the skills of controlled self-regulation, thereby influencing the course of pathological process. During the course of biofeedback sessions, it is possible to strengthen or weaken some biological parameters and so the level of tonic activation of the regulatory system whose activity it reflects (N.L. Kunelskaya, et al. 2014).

Neurofeedback has been used since the early 1970s in the treatment of developmental-behavioral and psychiatric disorders, including following diseases:

Biofeedback in general involves the use of visual and auditory or game form feedback to make physiological processes such as heart rate (HR), electromyography (EMG), and galvanic skin response (GSR) explicitly known to the individual. Through regular training sessions, patients learn to modulate these processes and, in turn, presumably affect their symptoms.

The use of electromyography (EMG) biofeedback in rehabilitation programs aimed at reducing physical disability caused by TBI or other neurological conditions has been well researched. EMG biofeedback has been used extensively in the management of spasticity, paresis, and apraxias.

Biofeedback trainer Mitsar-BFB with EEGStudio software is intended to provide a visual or auditory signal corresponding to the status of one or more of a patient’s physiological parameters so that the patient can control voluntarily these physiological parameters.

Physiological parameters (e.g., brain wave activity, muscle activity, ECG, etc.) are acquired by Mitsar-BFB by placing of electrode and special sensors on patient head and body.
